I Didn't Know I Was Playing the Infinite Game

October 29, 2026•3 min read

I've been reading the Infinite Game recently. I had a senior military leader mention the "Infinite Game". I thought it was a military thing, they have plenty of acronyms and things. I figured it had to do with leadership and the organization but never really understood exactly what until I started reading.

The book helps provide context, as anyone could imagine.

If you haven't read it - you absolutely should. I am entering a time in my life where I am much more reflective. My faith has grown. I have settled down. All the natural things that lead to a bit more reflection.

But reading this book - I realized martial arts has set me up for success without even knowing it.

The book compares the infinite game vs finite game. The Finite Game has rules, that both sides agree to and a definitive end. An end with a winner and loser; based on the rules.

The infinite game is more expansive - it has rules but no one has to abide by them. At any given point the rules can change or the players can choose to not follow the rules.

The game isn't motivated by rules or an end. It instead has to be driven by a vision, ideals, and values. There has to be such vigor in abidance of those rules and passion for the mission; that the players become dedicated to the cause at any cost for as much time as required.

Being a Black Belt is much like that. Being of service is very much like that. The what, how, and who can change but the mission and purpose stays the same. The players are resilient and dedicated to continue to strive regardless of who follows or doesn't follow the rules.

And of course - in my reflecting... I realize that is life.

What is the purpose? What other purpose than to be become your best self?

To be of service. Do good. And help others do the same.

If done right - the Black Belt follows those same principles. Constant growth with the purpose of helping others do the same.

But I have also been in the finite game mindset - and that is exhausting. Even though the infinite game never ends - it does provide purpose and fulfillment.

The finite game provides a "welp, good job" or "ok, now what".

I am all for winning - but if that is all. Take it from me - it wears off. Every high has a low.

The finite mindset you just keep chasing the next end - whereas the infinite mindset allows you to give it all with a purpose in mind vs a result. It builds resilience, intent, and the ability to adapt or change as the rules change.

And isn't that the goal. To be resilient, strive for something with purpose, and understand you can enjoy the journey along the way.

Cheers to those playing the infinite game.
